Dark X-Men 1 of 3

Dark Flaxen smells a trend... What's next, Dark Smurfs!??? Ok, Marvel, we've established my love hate relationship with the X-men, and while I don't lookforward to every time you milk this franchise, I'm actually looking forward to the rest of this series. Art work wise, nothing special, but the choice of breaking this first issue into three separate stories, is cool. First one drew me in right away. It was like I walked into a conversation that had been going on for a while, which is a smart start, and following that with afull blown shot of Namor, au-natural, was a very nice surprise (Marvel, havethe guts to lose the steam next time you do a shower scene!). Story one isall about inner conflicts, which I liked.

The second story, Mimic, rocked.

The third story, Dark Beast, is just not for me all together. Nothing I could relate to, and I'm not into the whole human-animal thing. I get tocaught up in the actualities of that concept- like how do they deal with theday to day activities of being alive. I shouldn't be thinking about thatwhile reading a comic book, which tells me I'm just not that into it.

Dark Flaxen says... Fine, Marvel, you got me interested in yet another X-Men story, but focus on the human conflict. That part is interesting

North 40 #I wish this book had focused on the secondary character, Robert, I liked him from the moment I saw him on the cover of Wildstorms, North 40. The art workis a real draw to this, but the story is strong as well. I don't mind thatits a bit hard to follow, and I kind of like the whole free-wheeling disjointed nature of it. It felt real to me at times, and since its a creepystory, I was sufficiently tense and uncomfortable throughout the entireread.

Dark Flaxen says... Hicks, Red Necks and super powers. Sounds good to me!

1) Marvel Divas 1 of 4

Hot guys, Martinis, confident and powerful chicks...loved this book right away! The whole thing feels very sex in the city (which I'm not capitalizingon purpose- cause it seems like there's lots of sex in Marvel Divas take on NYC), but its definitely written for the Sex in the City set, so guysbeware, this is about female bonding. Girls, pick this one up, but get setfor a pretty heavy and unexpected plot twist at the end. I¹m not sayingtheir decision to inject some real world health problems couldn¹t work, butin Marvel Divas, it took me out of the joy of this new series. I¹m all aboutcreative ways to confront real life problems, but this book was, up untilthe end, a great escape.

Dark Flaxen says... Inspired presentation of strong female leads in a comic, especially with lines like, "Men, why do they always ruin things by talking??", but damn if this book doesn't blind side you with a serious andsomewhat disturbing ending.

2) Greek Street -

If you're into disjointed stories about dead strippers, incest and zombies, great series for you. In all fairness, it does keep you reading, it does accomplish its goal of being disturbing, and it is very cool storytelling. Still though, I searched the internet for stats on stripper-murders and could only find three reported cases in the last twenty years.

Dark Flaxen says... I mean, sure, if you think there's not enough disturbing things in the real world, go ahead and pick up Greek Street.

3)Captain America Reborn #1

You had me at "hello". That Alex Ross imagining of you on thecover is just spectacular. The idea of an inspired interaction on thecredits page is brilliant. The actual art- while compelling- didn¹t seem upto par with everything else going on (presentation, style, vibe, pacing- allperfect).

Dark Flaxen says... It¹s about damn time. Welcome in the era of a true American hero.

4) Witchfinder 1 of 5

On the heels of the disaster that was the last Hellboy movie, it is a sweetreward that Dark Horse is finding new ways to share the great and in-depthworld of Hellboy through Witchfinder. The art set a cozy and familiar tone, allowing me to get right into the setting and time period and be open to allthe cool ideas this book introduces and reintroduces. I don¹t have a lot tosay here, not because there aren¹t things to talk about that this book doeswell, but because there¹s nothing all that new. It¹s just good and familiar.Kind of like seeing an old friend.

Dark Flaxen says... If you hated the last Hellboy, prepare to fall back inlove with the world its set in.

1) Berserker #1 Hmmm. Hmmmm. Scared. That’s the word. I was scared, andslightly freaked out by this book. Especially the end. Do not flip to it. Justread the whole thing. Not in the dark though, and definitely don’t grab aflashlight and slip under the covers and read this. Definitely don’t do that.Unless of course, you like to be freaked out, then by all means. Read thisunder the covers. Freak out, then think of me.

2) Gotham City Sirens #1

In one of my previous reviews, I bashed the “Bat”. While I still feel confident that DC must get a million new and brilliant ideas for original stories every day more compelling then the constant rehashing of the
same Bat-plot, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed, Gotham City Sirens #1. Not only does the team behind this new series successfully bring in elements from all of the Batman incarnations and make them feel fresh, but they present the ‘Sirens’ of Gotham (Cat Woman, Poison Ivy and Harlequin) in one of the most respectful ways I’ve ever seen women be portrayed in super hero comics. These gals are smart, sexy, strong and kick ass. The only buzz kill is on the very last page, which is disappointing, cause other wise I would have given this book my highest recommendation.

3) Predator #1

I really don’t get the whole Predator thing. I know that I’m not a twelve year old boy, but still- lame. The ironic thing is, Dark Horse’s new take on the franchise is actually really good, and would have definitely gotten the thumbs up from this girl, if only they’d not wasted frames on these stupid outdated action figures that were never that compelling to begin with. The art, flow and pacing reminded my of the hours I lost (and loved) in the world of Resident Evil 5 (PS3), and every character in the book, save for the Predators, works.

Dark Flaxen says… skip pages 6-7, 18, 22-23, and this is worth picking up.

4) Dark Wolverine #1

Damn! I guess I need to eat my words again! A few reviews back I condemned the entire world of X-Men, and now Marvel puts out Dark Wolverine, which is a terrific book, and yes, Marvel, I appreciate the obvious nod to me, Dark Flaxen. Wolverine’s son is all macho-bad-ass-rebel-gooey-sexiness and this first book sets the stage for a compelling and complex character whose set to rock my world.

Dark Flaxen says… The chip off the old blade is as bad as he should be, and that is just fine by me. Varrrroooom!

5) Starcraft #2

I mean, maybe if I was into the Blizzard game series, Starcraft, this would work for me, but I’mnot, and I’m assuming if you’re not, this isn’t the way to get into this world. It feels dated, I’m a little sick of being thrown into space battles with people I don’t care about, and I kind of take offense to the chick on the cover with the big boobs. Plus, it’s a lot of dialog to cram into your head for no pay off.

Dark Flaxen says… A must if you’re into the game.

6) Lethal Legion 1 of 3

Yes. Yes, I like this. Feels good. Good start, good characters, funny, sad at points, touching even. The man-shark was even a sympathetic character. Good ending. Want more. Nuff said.

Dark Flaxen says… Yes. Buy this book. Get into it. Only three issues. Worth the read.

1) Executive Assistant Iris #1 - Top Cow Productions

It took some effort for me to open this book Œcause... THE CHICK ON THE FRONT IS SO FREAK¹N HOT. Like Megan Fox meets Olivia Munn hot. Damn. All
tattooed and pantied up and stroking her bushido. Damn damn. The first page doesn¹t disappoint and draws you right in. The entire thing is extremely well done. Amazing pacing, great story, great characters, and plenty of Iris kicking ass.

Dark Flaxen says... Make this thing into a movie- NOW!

2) Herogasm #2 - Dynomite Entertainment

Gross, nasty, depraved, deviant, dumb... and the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time. It's laugh out loud funny. The Tick funny, if the Tick liked getting his rocks off between fights.

3) Mr. Negative #1 - Marvel Comics

The cover art on Mr. Negative is really intricate and clearly very meaningful to the folks behind issue #1- which should tip you off that your in for a shit load of detail, and this book doe not disappoint. However, I'm not really a detail oriented gal, so it kind of bored me and lost me a few pages in.

Dark Flaxen says... Not my thing, but If you¹ve got tons of time on your hands, and the desire to fill your brain with information you'll never apply in the real world, this one's for you.

Dead @ 17 Afterbirth #1 - Image Comics

I'm normally not a big fan of CG art in comic books, but something about Dead @ 17 look worked for me. Love the sassy attitude, the clothing, and the lead chicks kinda rule. The pacing's off and the dialog gets wordy, which took me out of the story from time to time.

1) Red Robin #1

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but, it's me, Dark Flaxen, so, what the Hell... I'm tired of Batman. I don't want to keep seeing it being reborn, or redone. It's boring. Red Robin is cool, don't get me wrong, but why? Why do we need another take on the Dark Knight? I don't get it. The last movie was depressing, and despite a face lift, there's still nothing new with this franchise. DC, you've got so much power, so many creators, so many cool concepts - put your energy into new stuff.

2) Anna Mercury 2 Issue #1

Geeeeezzzz!!! Anna Mercury 2 RULES! The thing starts out with a free fall that you will not forget - total rush! I love her. The story telling is really fresh, and when you get to the twist, you'll be genuinely surprised. I'm with you Avatar, keep it up!

Dark Flaxen says: A resounding YES to Anna Mercury 2. Total breath of freshair. Whew!

3) Trinity #1

First, love the nod to Vallejo from cover artist, Stjepan Sejic, which setthe perfect stage for the awesome start of Top Cow's, Trinity, Blood on theSands. I love books like this one, that, despite the complexity of thesubject matter, kick off the story in a clear and concise way. Plus, how can you not love a book whose dialog launches with, You smell like camel dung²and that offers a wicked be heading three panels in! Trinity has witches too,which is always good, and lots of cool magic and magical accoutrements.

1) Buck Rogers #1

I was sold on Dynamite's new Buck Rogers series because of two names: Flint Dille and Alex Ross - to bad they seem to have had no impact on a confusing and disjointed start to what can be an amazing rebirth of a great series. Carlos Rafael did an honorable job with the illustrations, no comment there, and the pacing and dialog are fun. But the simplicity of what made all the other incarnations of Buck Rogers work is simply not present in issue #1. But, I'm intrigued, and by the end of issue one, I wanted more....

Dark Flaxen says: Dynamite's Buck Rogers series has so much potential, but it might be smart to do a bit of homework about the franchise before youpick up Issue #1. So...Lets support this effort, and have faith that Dynamite will step up and really do it justice moving forward. We don't need to be spoon fed, Dynamite, but we like our Buck like we like our shots, straight up, no mixers.

2) New Mutants #1

Just terrific. Seriously. Terrific. And as those of you who checked out my comments on Runaways #10 last week know, I'm not a fan of X-Men stuff ingeneral. But New Mutants #1 looks to change that. I loved this from page 1. This series from Marvel, now in its second printing, is a blast. A perfect balance of great story, comedy, action and art.

1) Pride and Prejudice- Issue #1 of 5

When I first heard Marvel Comics was taking on Jane Austin's, "Pride and Prejudice", I thought, now that¹s an odd choice. I mean, there's militia in the classic tale, but it's pretty much Gossip Girl set in 19th Century England. When you see the cover they created for the first issue, you get

that Marvel got that concept too, because its¹ laid out like the cover of a teen girl magazine, enticing a passerby with promises of gossip, fashion, personal advice, and lots of boys. Thankfully, the team at Marvel got their kicks out on the cover, cause the first issue is totally respectful of the original story.

This comic adaptation of Pride and Prejudice honors Austin with not only a well thought out, well written and well paced version, but Marvel's color choice a wash of rich amber tones and warm Fall colors- sets the right mood from page one. I also commend the team on capturing the subtlety of the original- which I suspect was not easy to pull off in panel form.

Dark Flaxen says- Make yourself a nice hot cup of tea and settle in with Marvel Comics, Pride and Prejudice.

2) Mouse Guard: Winter 1152- #6

I've begun reading David Peterson¹s series, Mouse Guard: Winter 1152, six issues in to what is obviously a very compelling, complex and deep story. With my only experience in the realm of talking mice being those Stuart Little and Fievel Pictures, I was expecting adventure, but nothing could have prepared me for the rush I felt when the brave Redfur took on a giant owl with what looked like a plastic swizzle stick or the sadness I felt at some mouse named Lieam¹s untimely passing in a barren snow covered meadow. The story instantly draws you in.

This tale seems epic, dimmed a bit by Peterson¹s art, which I¹m sorry to say, should have been done by someone who could match Peterson's brilliant storytelling. But, the he¹s included rabbits that talk with British accents and some pretty heavy themes, so the whole thing works for me.

Dark Flaxen says- Seems like a great story, and if you're down with the actual writings of JRR Tolkien and you got a thing for mice, this is the perfect series for you!

3) Ignition City #3

Ok, I have no idea what the hell is going on in this story, but I freak'n love it! The art, the tough sexy chicks, the tension, the blatant homage¹s to everything from Rocketeer to the Iron Giant- Warren Ellis¹ Ignition City has me completely enthralled. It's the borrows from the a ton of other stories, but it does so with it¹s own style.

Dark Flaxen says- Get it for the purty pictures, stay for the action.

4) Runaways #10

Runaways tries way way way to hard. Period.

Dark Flaxen says- If you're an LA hipster wanting to find a comic book with insider references, enjoy this disjointed offensive offering from Marvel. If you think Runaways is a good addition to your X-Men library, it's not.

A Late Night Visit From One Of The Watchmen, Before His Movie Hits The Big Screens

....On his way down to check out how opening night was gonna be in Hollywood, Rorschach made a special stop at his favorite comic book store... probably to check out the latest issue of Tales Of The Black Freighter... or maybe get some of our free watchmen posters.

He rushed in, signed a few copies of the book and then as fast as he had entered (before we could call the police), he left again. We were lucky to get a few snapshots of him before he darted out of the store.

Right as he got to the door though he turned around and said in his hoarse voice... "By the way, you need a stronger lock. That new one broke after one shove."

The 2009 Sci-Fi Themed Nerdcore Calendar Signing went off with a bang, 7 of the girls were here and they all looked amazing, as did the 2009 calendar. Golden Apple rolled out a bunch of booze and people drank well into the night.

The Calendar features many iconic sci-fi themes such as Barbarella, Aliens, Dr. Who, and Battlestar Galactica. If you haven't seen the calendar stop on down and check it out yourself. It would make a great gift for that guy who has everything... everything, except naked girls dressed in scantily clad sci-fi outfits. you can pick it up in store, or at our online store.

Golden Apple Hosts an IGN Gears of War Party Featuring Dom (Carlos Ferro) and the Nerdcore Girls

What did you do for Halloween? If you came out to Golden Apple you got to meet two of the sexy 2009 Nerdcore Models, Carlos Ferro (who voices Dom in GOW), and plenty of other awesomely costumed peoples.

The event kicked off at 7pm and went well past closing time. People dressed up (everyone who came, you looked amazing), played Gears of War drank lots of booze, and partied til the lights went out. There was a costume contest and some sweet prizes were handed out.

IGN, Dom, and Nerdcore all brought great handouts and we still have a few of them as well if you wanted to head down to our store and snag a few.

We still have the 5-pack of toys that we featured for the signing, they include all four of the main characters and a Locust torque bow-er. Click on this link if you wanna see all the pics from the night and believe me they are some sexy pictures.

Also if you missed seeing the Nerdcore girls here don't fret, they will be back on November 20th for their calendar release and they will be in greater numbers (watch out single guys).

Milo Ventimiglia and Tim Sale Signing a HUGE success!!!

The line for the New REST comic started at around noon, and was a couple blocks long by the time Milo and Tim showed up. Milo showed up and walked the line greeting his fans. Then continued to sign for a looong time.

Drink n' Draw (Come get ridiculous with not so sober artists)

This Friday the 29th of August, from 7:30 until 10 we will be having a DRINK N' DRAW event here at Golden Apple. If you are confused as to what exactly a drink and draw event is, here's a quick explanation.... Artists (regular and the comic book variety) come here and do sketches of whatever you want them to, whilst being extremely (or maybe not so) drunk.

There will be a lot of artists here doing sketches and it isn't quite like a normal comic book signing in any respect. Usually you would have to buy a certain comic or bring in a specific item for them to sketch on. This one is totally up to you.

So come on in, stop on by, and join us for this 200 proof event. We hope to see you here.

The Mark Millar & Tony Harris War Heroes signing a GREAT SUCCESS!!!

The Mark Millar & Tony Harris War Heroes signing was a great success. Thanks go out to all of the great customers and fans of the geniuses (Mark Millar, Tony Harris) that were signing.

If you didn't get to make it to the event you can check out pictures at our flickr page. Lots of people came out that night and Mark and Tony signed until the wee hours of the night (way past our bedtime). Old war movies were being projected onto the back of our store and the intense Crazy for Cult show was rocking next door.

Even the Nerdcore crew was down supporting the cause bringing down Karlie Montana in full War Hero gear (she looked awesome, pictures on the flickr). Tons of free schwag was given away, and if you were lucky enough to get here early you could have snagged a free gift bag.

Anyways, if you didn't get your War Heroes comic or you variant you can still stop in, we do have a few of each left. And thanks again for all your support.
